Plywood | 35 x 44 x 16 cm

Mucilinda, the benevolent Naga (giant serpent), stands as a pivotal figure in the life of Gautama Buddha. In the early stages of his spiritual journey, while he was still Siddhartha on the cusp of Awakening beneath the sacred Bodhi Tree in Bodh-Gaya, Mucilinda played a vital role in his tale.

According to the ancient legends, it is said that approximately six weeks into Gautama Buddha’s profound meditation, the heavens themselves darkened for seven days, a celestial portent of significance. During this period, a torrential rain descended upon the earth. However, it was in this moment of climactic turmoil that the mighty King of Serpents, Mucilinda, emerged from the depths of the earth.

With a majestic sweep of his hood, Mucilinda shielded the serene Siddhartha beneath, offering protection to the one who would soon become the source of enlightenment and salvation for countless souls. This act serves as a powerful embodiment of Mucilinda’s protective aspect, a symbol of unwavering guardianship and care.

As the tempest eventually gave way to tranquility, the serpent king gracefully transitioned to his human form. With deep reverence, he bowed before the Buddha, acknowledging the profound destiny of the one he had sheltered. Filled with joy and wisdom, Mucilinda returned to his hidden palace beneath the earth, leaving behind a testament to the interconnectedness of all beings and the profound acts of compassion that shape the path to enlightenment. This sculpture embodies the essence of Mucilinda’s protective presence and the sacred connection between the divine and the earthly realms.
